Adult Education in PA has some significant changes to master. Funding and program cuts have been difficult for the field to grasp. Unfortunately, change is the only thing that remains the same - so now we must move forward.
Tutors of Literacy in the Commonwealth will still be offering services, although they will look a bit different than they have in the past. We are still here with online resources and we will be offering consultation services which will provide ongoing, in depth support specific to the agency, volunteer instructors and tutors. We will grow from this change and the adult learners will benefit - of that we must make certain!

Watch for Further Online Supports for Tutors of Adult Learners
Are you interested in web-based resources connecting you with other tutors of adult learners?
Tutors of Literacy is planning to start a wiki for tutors as well as a Ning social network account. A wiki is "the simplest online database that could possibly work" quoted from http://wiki.org/wiki.cgi?WhatIsWiki; a wiki allows for anyone to create or edit information so tutors can ask questions, share information and share hyperlinks. Ning is a platform where a social network for a select group of people (namely adult literacy tutors) would be created and it would be similar to a Facebook account.
While this all may sound like overload, my goal is to provide your preferred mode of online support so that you can interact however you choose.

Tutor Networking
Would you like to connect with other tutors of adult learners?
You can do this by going to TLC's Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/pages/State-College-PA/Tutors-of-Literacy-in-the-Commonwealth/114351797204, and posting on the various discussion boards. You can also make comments on the posts on this blog. Online tutor trainings are going to be available soon and these trainings will promote peer interaction as well.

Tutor Trainings
TLC is now in a position to start scheduling tutor trainings again. If you and/or a group of your peer tutors would like to find out more about the tutor trainings provided by TLC, please contact Kim at kim@tlcliteracy.org. We have basic tutor trainings, various topic specific in-services, online trainings ready to be piloted, and we will also custom design trainings to meet your needs. Research indicates that learners who have teachers/tutors who pursue professional development make greater gains. Knowing that you are the type of tutor who wants your learner to do his/her best then you will want to do everything you can to make that happen.

PAACE Conference Breaking News
Due to the financial crisis that is affecting most programs in the state, the PAACE conference will be moved to June 1 - 3, 2010. The conference will still be held at the Penn Stater in State College.
Please mark your calendars for these new dates. These days are the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday right after Memorial Day.
The request for proposals will be taken down and reopened toward the end of 2009.
